314 I will do upacharam
By singing with the language of silence
By tuning the veena (harp?) of heart
Giving thala (beat) with my mind
I will sing song each day.
Arranging the stage in my heart
Dancing with brimming emotions
With a thala of ‘tandattam’
I will dance the joyful dance.
Adding music with sweet Tamil
Mixing with the nectar of love
Inviting you with the bliss of bhakti
I will offer myself to you with all these (upacharas = services)
Is there any better upacahram other than this?
Tell me where you will receive other than here
You accept this with a pleasing heart
This poor came with inner longing to day.
By keeping your feet on my head, thinking,
How many upacharams can I perform?
When I was waiting for you with much humility
By tying the towel in my waist
Do you need to knock the door by standing outside?
Do I need to say, ‘Please come in’?
Do I need bliss more than this?
As this slave is waiting for your visit with much enthusiasm?

This is a beautiful experience which is very difficult to translate in English. The word ‘ubacharam’ is used about all the seva that we need to do to a guest. Traditionally it is known as ‘sodacha upacharam’ =sixteen@ kinds of ‘upacharam’.
Of course this is done to a deity. But the context is that a deity is treated as a ‘guest’ in a house. So all the sixteen upacharas done to the guest also should be done the deity. Though these are written in the context of a Brahmin receiving another Brahmin as a guest, yet many parts of them are done till the recent past and few are still practised—as part of our tradition.
But this night when I began to sit for my regular meditation I try to do my sadhana of ‘silence’, which I like at the most. Then some inspiration prompted me to write a poem. Then I said, ‘let me remain silence. As even writing a song spoils the sadhana of silence’. But I cannot continue much as the inner compulsion began to write the song in my mind. As the line began to flow, I took a paper and wrote this song, telling what kind of ‘upacharam’ that I can do for the Lord.
I know I cannot give the correct and best translation for this song. But if you want to understand the mood and the spirit in which I wrote this song, you have to read that rough translation. Otherwise learn Tamil to understand the meaning and the mood of this song.

மவுனம் என்ற மொழியாலே பாடி
மனம் என்ற வீணையை மீட்டி
சிந்தனையின் ஓட்டத்தில் தாளமும்போட்டு
தினம் பாடுவேன் உன்மீது பாட்டு
சதிராடும் உள்ளத்தில் மேடையிட்டு
ததும்பும் உணர்வுடன் ஆட்டம் போட்டு
தந்ததம் தந்ததம் என்று முழக்கமிட்டு
நானும் ஆடுவேன் ஆனந்தக் கூத்து
இசையுடன் இனிய தமிழையும் சேர்த்து
இன்னமுதம் என்ற அன்பில் குழைத்து
பக்தியின் பரவசத்தில் உன்னையும் அழைத்து
பாங்குடன் அளிபேன் என்னையும் சேர்த்து
இதனினும் நல்ல உபசாரம் ஒன்று
எங்குநீ பெறுவாய் சொல்லதை நன்று
ஏற்றுக் கொள்வாய் இதனைநீ என்று
ஏங்கி நான்வந்தேன் ஏழையும் இன்று
ஐயனின் திருப்பாதம் சிரம்மீது கொண்டு
எத்தனை உபசாரம் செய்வேனோ என்று
அரைகட்டி உன்முன்னே பணிவாக வந்து
எதிர்பார்த்துப் பணிவுடன் காத்திருக்கும் போது
வாசலில் நின்றுநீ தட்டவும் வேண்டுமோ
“உள்ளேவா” என்றுநான் சொல்லவும் வேண்டுமோ
ஆவலுடன் உன்வரவை எதிர்பார்க்கும் அடிமைக்கு
இதனினும் ஆனந்தம் வேறெதும் வேண்டுமோ
