363 Unknown Grace
Who will understand this Compassion?
Who will understand your grace?
Unless experienced in the heart
How can others understand by proclaiming it?
We need not talk any philosophy
We need not engaged in many debate
We need not even analyse with our buddhi
Bhakti is enough for it (to understand)
We need not understand many Sastras (code of contacts)
We need not do many rituals
We need not consider the position and status
Realizing one’s shortcomings (to understand it) is enough
We need not reciprocate it by giving something
We need not even dance to worship Him
We need not even Praise Him in many ways
Reaching (Saranagati) His feet is enough for that
We need not communicate by any writings
We need not compose songs and sing
We need not even try to explain it
Which is beyond the reach of comprehension?
Joining with those who understood it
And bowing at His feet and singing His praise
And living for others to understand who didn’t understand it
Many will understand that Grace.

As was reflecting my recent study on Vivekananda (see song 360), I realized that the concept of Grace, according to my understanding and experience dwarfs all other philosophical and theological discussion. One may have all kinds of understanding and approach to metaphysics, but once touched by the Grace of God, rest looks immaterial and meaningless. This unique foundation of bhakti helps me to rejoice in the Lord all the time. As I was staying in the ashram alone, I reflected upon the grace of God and wrote this song.
In the fourth stanza I saw that we need not even sing and praise Him. But in the final stanza I say that we will sing and praise Him. This is not a contradiction. The first is a means to communicate that Grace to others, which we try to do. On the other hand the final one is the natural and spontaneous expression when we join with other bhaktas who understood it. The former is a method to communicate and the later is the result of that experience.
363 அறியாக் கருணை
இந்தக் கருணையை எவர்தான் அறிவார்
உந்தன் அருளை எவர்தான் புரிவார்
உள்ளம் தன்னில் உணர்ந்தோர் அன்றி
உரைப்பதால் மட்டும் என்றும் அறியார்
தத்துவங்கள் எவையும் பேச வேண்டாம்
தர்க்கம் பலவும் செய்ய வேண்டாம்
புத்தியாலும் நாம் அலச வேண்டாம்
பக்தி ஒன்று இருந்தால் போதும்
சாத்திரங்கள் பல அறிய வேண்டாம்
சடங்கு பலவும் செய்ய வேண்டாம்
கோத்திரம் குலம் பார்க்க வேண்டாம்
தன்குறையை மட்டும் உணர்ந்தால் போதும்
பதிலாய் ஒன்றைத் தரவும் வேண்டாம்
பாடி ஆடித் தொழவும் வேண்டாம்
பலபடியாய் நாம் துதிக்க வேண்டாம்
பாதம் தன்னை அடைந்தால் போதும்
ஏட்டில் எழுதிக் காட்ட வேண்டாம்
இசையைக் கூட்டிப் பாட வேண்டாம்
எவர்க்கும் புரியா அந்த நிலையை
எடுத்துக் கூறி விளக்க வேண்டாம்
புரிந்தோர் தம்முடன் ஒன்று கூடி
பணிந்து அவனின் புகழைப் பாடி
அறியார் அறிய வாழ்ந்து காட்ட
அறிவார் பலரும் அந்தக் கருணை
