396 A secret
I understood
The secret
which was hidden to the wise
and given to the unwise
I searched it
Through knowledge
Not understanding
What ‘jnana is?’
Reading so many scriptures
And diligently searching
And thinking deeply
I have done the research
I listened
The debates of the wise
And like them
I too debated (about it)
In order to
Receive it through a preceptor
I searched for Him
Every day
However I try
With my own strength
The secret which is beyond my reach?
Finally I understood it.
Once I attained
That jnana
He came Himself
Seeking after me
Removing my ignorance
And removing my sin
He gave bhakti
Which bestows mukti?

After reading today’s portion in Muktiveda, Luke 10:14-22, when I was meditating on the verse 21, I began to think about it. This is one subject with wihic I never become tiref—in thinking, talking and writing: bhakti verses Jnana. Though I will not exhalt one at the cost of the other or try to subordinate one to the other, yet recognizing the complementary nature of both of them—even the essential role of them, I would prefer to keep bhakti as the safe ground for me to stand and launch to other areas. Bhakti as a concept or doctrine won’t give mukti independently. As bhakti is not possible without a Personal God, as usual here bhakti stands for ‘faith’.

ஞானிக்கு மறைத்துப்
பேதைக்கு அளித்த
இரகசியம் தன்னை
நானும் அறிந்தேன்
ஞானத்தின் ஞானத்தால்
நானுமே தேடினேன்
ஞானம் எதுவெனச்
சரியாகப் புரியாமல்
நூல்பல படித்து
நுட்பமாய்த் தேடி
ஆழ்ந்து சிந்தித்து
ஆராய்ந்தும் பார்த்தேன்
அறிந்தவர் சொன்ன
வாதங்கள் கேட்டேன்
அவர்போல் பிறருடன்
வாதித்தும் பார்த்தேன்
ஆசான் அருளினால்
அடைய வேண்டி
அனுதினம் நானும்
தேடி அலைந்தேன்
எத்தனை முயன்றும்
என்பெலன் கொண்டு
அடைய முடியாத
இரகசியம் புரிந்தேன்
அந்த ஞானம்
அடைந்த உடனே
அவனே வந்தான்
என்னைத் தேடி
பேதமை போக்கி
பாவத்தை நீக்கி
முக்தியை அளிக்கும்
பக்தியைத் தந்தான்
